The governor’s office said California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA to support response to the Norte Fire in Orange County. Evacuation orders are in effect and residents were urged to follow guidance from local officials.

The office said the Norte Fire ignited just after 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 16, 2026, in the San Clemente area south of San Juan Capistrano and has burned approximately 465 acres. The release said the blaze is threatening nearly 13,000 people and prompted evacuation orders and warnings for about 4,000 homes; officials attributed the spread to strong Santa Ana winds, dry vegetation and elevated temperatures.

The governor’s office said the FMAG is provided on a cost-share basis and will assist local and state agencies in applying for 75% reimbursement of eligible fire suppression costs. The grant does not pay all costs; it reduces the local and state share of eligible expenses for suppression activities.

State officials moved resources ahead of the winds. The governor directed Cal OES to position five fire engines, one bulldozer, one water tender, one helicopter and a total of 45 additional firefighters and support personnel to Orange County on Oct. 15, 2026, and the Cal OES State Operations Center is activated to coordinate statewide resources.

Officials urged residents to sign up for local emergency alerts, prepare a wildfire action plan and a go-bag, secure outdoor furniture and stay clear of downed trees and power lines. The release also advised residents to plan for potential power outages and to contact their utility provider for information on any Public Safety Power Shutoffs; for more preparedness guidance officials directed readers to Ready.ca.gov.

Governor said, "By securing this federal assistance, we are ensuring our local and state partners have the critical resources they need to aggressively fight the Norte Fire, protect lives and property, and keep Californians safe."
