, who commanded NASA's Artemis II flight around the Moon, has been named Caltech associate vice president and deputy director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, JPL announced Oct. 28. He starts Nov. 30.

Wiseman, an emeritus astronaut and retired U.S. Navy captain, will be responsible for the strategic leadership and continuous improvement of laboratory operations, working with Caltech on institutional planning, management and compliance, the announcement said. He will also serve as Center Management Authority for JPL mission execution and as the lab's primary interface for national security programs. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

On Artemis II, Wiseman and crewmates , and Jeremy Hansen traveled 695,081 miles on a lunar flyby that took them farther from Earth than any humans before them, according to JPL.

“Reid has spent his career at the edge of what is possible, and he has the technical judgment, operational experience, and leadership to help push that edge farther,” NASA Administrator said.

Wiseman joined NASA's astronaut corps in 2009, spent 165 days aboard the International Space Station on Expedition 41 in 2014 and was chief of the astronaut office from December 2020 to November 2022. In 2016 he was a commander of NASA's 21st Extreme Environment Mission Operations expedition, living eight days in an undersea habitat.

“That experience was really the jumping off point to go do the impossible things that Caltech and JPL dream, dare together, and do for NASA and the nation,” Wiseman said of Artemis II.

JPL Director Dave Gallagher said Wiseman “adds incredible bench strength to our leadership team.” The lab is approaching the 90th anniversary of its founding by Caltech.
