Los Angeles County Parks has started a free golf program for kids ages 11 to 14 who have little or no experience with the game, part of a fall programming guide the department released Oct. 27.
The first Drop Zone Golf session was held Oct. 25 at Whittier Narrows Golf Course. El Cariso Golf Course starts Dec. 5 and Maggie Hathaway Golf Course starts Dec. 6, with Los Amigos and Eaton Canyon to follow on dates not yet set. Each site runs weekly through March 2027.
Sessions last 90 minutes and take up to 21 kids, with three instructors. Registration is required at bit.ly/youthdropzone. The department said the program is aimed at youth from underserved communities and groups historically underrepresented in golf, and is the first of three steps that lead to on-course play.
County nature centers will hold Día de los Muertos events Oct. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at San Gabriel River Park, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stoneview Nature Center and Nov. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at San Dimas Nature Center. Trick or Treat Village runs at 59 parks through Oct. 31, and Harvest Festival comes to 50 parks Nov. 10 through 24.
After-school programs continue through May 21, 2027. Every Body Plays, a free program with homework help, a tech lab, arts and sports, runs weekdays from 2:30 to 6 p.m., and free snacks are served to youth 18 and under at 49 parks from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Year-round pools offer free Every Body Swims sessions, Learn to Swim for ages 7 to 17 at $25 a session and free morning sessions for adults 65 and older and people with disabilities. Youth@Work offers paid park jobs to county residents 14 to 24 who meet eligibility criteria.
“We’re excited to offer a wide range of programming this fall for youth, seniors, and families,” said Norma E. García-González, director of LA County Parks. Schedules and sign-ups are at parks.lacounty.gov.
