Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean C. Logan said his office received correspondence from the U.S. Department of Justice on Oct. 13, 2026, concerning assertions about voter eligibility and citizenship.

The letter included a USB drive and a handwritten note providing a password; the office has not accessed the drive because doing so would conflict with established data privacy and information security protocols, the statement said.

The letter did not specify how many individuals were involved or describe the information contained in the records, the county said.

The RR/CC said it is reviewing the materials in coordination with the California Secretary of State and the state attorney general to determine the next appropriate steps.

The office said federal and state laws require removal of a voter to be based on verifiable information and not on unconfirmed data matching.

With the 2026 General Election underway, the RR/CC said it will continue administering a safe, secure, accurate, and transparent election and will follow established verification procedures while protecting the rights of eligible voters.

The county posted a copy of the Oct. 13 letter and the accompanying handwritten note on its website.
