The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health warned that the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Oct. 15 through Oct. 17 and that a red flag warning for portions of the county begins Oct. 15.
The advisory covers the Malibu Coast, Los Angeles County Beaches, Palos Verdes Hills and the Los Angeles Inland Coast; the department said unusually warm daytime and overnight temperatures could raise the risk of heat-related illness.
Residents should check specific neighborhood conditions using the NWS HeatRisk map and follow the NWS’ Understand HeatRisk guidance for actions tied to local risk levels, the department said.
The department listed basic precautions: stay hydrated; avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours; wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat or use an umbrella; use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher; and never leave children or pets in a vehicle.
If a home becomes too hot and cannot be cooled, the county said residents should go to an air-conditioned space or a cooling center; people who need help finding a cool location can call 211 or visit ready.lacounty.gov/heat.
Call 911 immediately for signs of heat stroke or severe heat illness, the county said; those signs include confusion, fainting, hot red skin that may be dry or damp, a body temperature of 103°F or higher, a fast and strong pulse, headache, dizziness or nausea.
“Heat causes more deaths in the U.S. annually than floods, storms, and lightning combined. Those most likely to get ill during the heat include older adults, young children, outdoor workers, athletes, and individuals with chronic medical conditions,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer.
The county also recommended practical steps for people without air conditioning: take cool showers or baths, avoid using ovens or stoves that add heat indoors, and visit libraries, malls, splash pads or community pools that are air conditioned.
