The Riverside County Board of Supervisors voted to establish an Ad Hoc Committee to study oversight options related to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the county said.
The committee will hold three public listening sessions to gather resident feedback: Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Riverside County Administrative Center Board Hearing Room, 4080 Lemon Street, Riverside; Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Coachella Valley Water District Steve Robbins Administration Building, 75515 Hovley Lane East, Palm Desert; and a virtual session on Monday, Oct. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Anyone who wishes to speak at the virtual listening session must sign up before the meeting start time by filling out the online speaker form; English and Spanish livestream links will be provided for the virtual session, the county said.
The Ad Hoc Committee will review how other counties and cities perform law‑enforcement oversight, evaluate existing oversight capabilities and consider legal, financial and operational impacts. The county said the Executive Office, the Sheriff’s Department and other county departments will provide administrative and technical support. Findings and recommendations will return to the Board of Supervisors by the end of January 2027.
"The purpose of these listening sessions is to hear directly from the people we serve," said Board Chair Second District Supervisor . "Community input is essential as we explore oversight options and evaluate what approaches may best support transparency, accountability and public trust in Riverside County."
"Meaningful public engagement is a critical part of good governance," said First District Supervisor . "We encourage residents to take part in this process and share their perspectives as we work toward recommendations that reflect the needs and values of Riverside County communities."
Feedback collected at the listening sessions, and written comments submitted through the committee website, will be summarized and posted online; the county said all personal identifying information will be removed before posting. More information is available on the Ad Hoc Committee’s webpage.
