The San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services said it hosted its first-ever Family Preparedness Day on Saturday, Sept. 26, in partnership with the San Bernardino County Library.
The morning featured hands-on activities designed to build practical emergency preparedness skills.
Staff demonstrated how to assemble emergency kits for the home, car and shelter-in-place situations; they also showed kit options for pets.
Children and adults practiced basic first aid and took part in a hands-on fire extinguisher exercise.
Highland Fire Department personnel led hands-only CPR demonstrations.
Emergency Services staff worked one-on-one with residents to help them sign up for the Telephone Emergency Notification System and to download the Ready SB County app; those tools connect families with information before, during and after an emergency.
“It was incredibly rewarding to see how eager people were to learn more about emergency preparedness,” Brianna Viteri, public relations and community outreach coordinator for Emergency Services, said. She said attendees were asking questions, practicing skills and taking materials home to share with workplaces, neighbors and loved ones.
Several attendees asked when the next Family Preparedness Day would be held, showing continued interest in repeated training opportunities for residents. Residents can find additional preparedness resources at prepare.SBCounty.gov.
