California State Parks said Oct. 1, 2026, that it has awarded an emergency contract for repairs to Malibu Pier at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, a step toward reopening the outer end of the pier that has been closed since January 2025 for structural safety concerns. The rest of the pier has remained open to the public, the department said.
Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-October and is expected to last approximately three months, State Parks said. The $2.125 million project, funded through Proposition 4 (2024 Climate Bond), will repair or replace deteriorated and missing pilings and replace bracing to strengthen the pier. The department said it anticipates completing repairs by the end of January 2027.
The emergency contract was awarded to Cushman Contracting Corporation and was aided by Gov. ’s Sept. 21 emergency proclamation ahead of the anticipated El Niño storm season, according to the release.
After the temporary closure of the pier’s end, above-water and underwater inspections confirmed the need for significant repairs, State Parks said. A specialized ocean engineering consultant completed a comprehensive structural assessment in June 2026 that identified deteriorated and missing pilings requiring repair or replacement.
State Parks said it is coordinating with the State Fire Marshal, California Coastal Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, State Lands Commission and State Water Resources Control Board to expedite regulatory reviews and emergency permitting, and that it continues to work with the City of Malibu and other partners.
