The Los Angeles County Probation Department said it safely evacuated 38 female and gender-expansive youths from Campus Vernon Kilpatrick on the evening of Oct. 15 because of the Bryson Canyon Fire in Malibu.
The decision to evacuate was made by the campus superintendent, and the youths arrived at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall/SYTF in Sylmar, the department said.
“We understand that an evacuation can be stressful for youth and their families,” the department said in a statement. “Staff are available to attend to the youth’s needs and provide support. Parents and legal guardians are being notified directly and will receive updates as circumstances change.”
The Bryson Fire started at about 4:41 p.m. Oct. 15 near Encinal Canyon Road. By Oct. 16, firefighters had reached 17% containment on the 146-acre fire, with no reported structure loss or damage and only minor injuries to fire personnel, according to the county's Coordinated Joint Information Center.
County fire officials said Red Flag Warnings would keep fire risk high across Los Angeles County through Saturday night.
The Probation Department said it will issue updates as they become available. It had not announced when the youths would return to the campus as of its Oct. 15 statement.
