Gov. announced the state will connect thousands of sailors and Marines returning to San Diego after a 321-day deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln with state-funded mental health services through the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics at Veterans Village of San Diego and the California Veterans Health Initiative, the governor's office said.
The California Veterans Health Initiative, launched in 2024, uses up to $38 million in competitive grant funding to support outreach, outpatient clinical care, case management, peer support and nontraditional approaches to mental health care.
As of August 2026, CVHI grantees reported delivering more than 30,000 appointments statewide; that included 23,083 outpatient clinical appointments, 6,360 case management appointments and 1,318 peer support appointments.
Grantees said the initiative has shortened wait times and improved access to culturally competent services, and outreach efforts have connected veterans and families who had not previously engaged with available resources.
Sailors, Marines and their families can learn more at CalVet’s CVHI webpage or through the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics at Veterans Village of San Diego; they can also contact their local County Veterans Service Office for help navigating benefits. Veterans in crisis, and those concerned about a veteran, can call 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.
