Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean C. Logan said the county today responded to a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit challenging voter eligibility and the processing of Vote by Mail ballots for the Nov. 3, 2026 general election.

The county said its formal response, filed after the DOJ’s Oct. 13 correspondence, points out that the list the DOJ provided referenced individuals throughout California, not specifically in Los Angeles County; the county said the DOJ filed a lawsuit without regard for its timely response.

Dean C. Logan said the county is coordinating with the California Secretary of State, the California Attorney General and the county’s counsel while it continues administering the election.

Logan wrote, "We cannot withhold or refuse to count ballots based solely on unverified allegations, nor can we disregard the legal requirements governing our election."

The county said the Department of Justice has not provided the underlying evidence, source, or methodology supporting its assertions; the county said it cannot act on records that are outside of its jurisdiction.

Logan urged voters to be confident that the office "will continue following established laws and procedures to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate and every valid ballot is counted."

The county posted its formal response and the California Secretary of State’s response online; the county provided a link to its response at https://rrcc.box.com/s/y750a5njl1wiyksohn7aik9k2w3ilzkm.
