Governor announced that he is naming the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency Building after Dolores Huerta, the governor’s office said.

The new building opened on Jan. 21, 2026, and houses approximately 2,500 state employees from the Labor & Workforce Development Agency, Employment Development Department, Department of Industrial Relations and the California Workforce Development Board.

“Every person who walks through those doors should be reminded of the standard she set: stand up for workers, expand opportunity, and keep pushing until people get the respect they deserve,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said.

“Dolores Huerta lived a life of service with an unrelenting commitment to justice and the dignity of all people,” said , California Secretary of Labor. Knox said the state owes Huerta an immeasurable debt for her advocacy and that the building’s name will remind people of her legacy and mission to advance a more just and equitable future.

Practically, the naming places Huerta’s name on the building that houses agencies Californians use for unemployment, workplace enforcement and workforce programs; visitors and staff will interact with those services in a building that now bears her name.

The governor’s office said Gov. Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom issued a statement on Huerta’s passing.
