Gov. ordered flags flown at half-staff after the death of Dolores Huerta; the governor and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom issued a joint statement, the governor’s office said.
The governor’s office described Huerta as a labor leader, civil-rights activist and member of the California Hall of Fame; it said she began as a teacher working with children of farmworkers and later helped lead organizing in the National Farm Workers Association and the United Farm Workers.
The governor and First Partner wrote, "Dolores represented the best of us." The statement also highlighted her signature phrase "Sí, se puede" and said that phrase captured her belief that nothing was impossible.
The office recalled Huerta’s role in protests and the Delano grape boycott and said her organizing "fundamentally reshaped California," adding that her legacy lives on in people who follow her work.
The release is available in Spanish, the governor’s office noted.
