San Bernardino County is urging residents, businesses, schools and organizations to participate in the Great California ShakeOut at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, the county said.

The county noted it sits in an active seismic region with several faults, including the San Andreas Fault; the ShakeOut gives people a chance to practice actions that can reduce injuries when shaking starts.

When the shaking begins, Drop to your hands and knees before the earthquake can knock you down; cover your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk if one is nearby; hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops. If no shelter is available, continue protecting your head and neck with your arms.

The drill is also a prompt to maintain preparedness beyond a single exercise. Before Oct. 15, review your household or workplace emergency plan; check emergency supplies; secure heavy furniture and other objects that could fall or move; and identify safe places to Drop, Cover and Hold On.

Register as a participant at ShakeOut.org/california/register/; resources for families, businesses, schools, faith-based organizations and community groups are at ShakeOut.org/california and ShakeOut.org/california/resources. Then, at 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 15, wherever you are, Drop, Cover and Hold On.
