The County of San Diego Communications Office announced the 11th annual Warrior Hike Challenge for Saturday, Nov. 7, at El Cajon Mountain in El Capitan County Preserve; the event is presented by County Parks and Recreation as a test of physical and mental stamina for military members, veterans, families and supporters.
Participants pick one of three routes. Boot Camp is 2 miles and rated moderate; Recon is 6+ miles and rated moderate; Warrior is 11+ miles and rated difficult.
The event is free and open to all ages; dogs on a leash are allowed. The county said park staff will be on site and along the trail from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to offer support.
Women in the Wild will lead guided hikes to the 1-mile and 3-mile turnaround points starting at 7 a.m.
Hikers should plan for steep inclines and limited shade; the county recommends ample water, calling for 1+ gallons for those headed to the summit, sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and walking poles as needed.
El Capitan Preserve is at 13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road in Lakeside. The parking area and trailhead are at Wildcat Canyon Road and Blue Sky Ranch Road; overflow parking is at Oakoasis County Preserve across the street and along Wildcat Canyon Road.
