Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews are repairing a leak on the Westgate Trunkline at 13316 W. Sunset Blvd. in Brentwood, between Allenford Avenue and Mandeville Canyon Road, the department said Oct. 10. The trunkline serves the westside portion of LADWP's water service area, including Pacific Palisades.

The leak was first identified Friday afternoon and crews worked overnight to assess and isolate it, LADWP said.

In a later update Oct. 10, the department said crews were depressurizing the pipe to begin onsite repairs. Because the water system is pressurized, crews must carefully close large valves in Brentwood to prevent impacts elsewhere in the system, a process LADWP said may take several hours.

LADWP said water service in Pacific Palisades remains safe and reliable and customers continue to have access to drinking water. It has activated contingency plans to prepare the backup water supply for the area, installed earlier this year, and said all water tanks serving the Palisades are currently full. The department called the measures precautionary, meant to minimize the risk of a service interruption.

The department is asking Palisades customers to conserve water to help maintain system pressure while repairs are underway.

LADWP closed the Temescal Canyon Trail, where the recently installed backup drinking water pipe runs, so crews can operate water pumps safely. It said it is coordinating with the Los Angeles Fire Department on contingencies for fire protection and emergency services during the incident.

All eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of Sunset Boulevard between Allenford Avenue and Mandeville Canyon Road are closed. LADWP urged cyclists, pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes. Updates will be posted at LADWPNews.com.
