San Diego County posted Halloween safety tips for families, drivers and party hosts ahead of trick-or-treating this weekend.
The county recommended choosing light-colored costumes and adding reflective tape, glow sticks or flashlights to increase visibility after dark; it also suggested using face paint instead of masks to avoid limiting sight and reducing trip hazards.
Parents should remind children to use sidewalks, cross at marked crosswalks and look both ways before crossing; the county said young children should trick-or-treat with a trusted adult and drivers should slow down in residential areas to watch for children who may run into the street.
The county advised that children wait until they finish trick-or-treating before eating candy and that parents inspect treats, discarding anything opened, damaged or suspicious; it also recommended checking ingredient labels for allergies.
To protect pets, the county urged keeping animals inside or in a secure area, ensuring tags are on pets and that microchip information is current so animals are less likely to bolt or be harmed by visitors.
For decorations the county recommended battery-operated candles when possible and keeping decorations away from open flames and heat sources; it also advised clearing walkways of cords, power strips and props to prevent trips and falls.
If celebrations include alcohol, the county said to plan for a safe ride home by designating a sober driver or using a rideshare service; it reminded residents never to drive impaired.
With planning and awareness, the county said families and neighbors can enjoy a safe and festive Halloween.
