San Diego County is urging residents and businesses to prepare properties for expected El Niño rains, in a county communications advisory.

The county said severe weather and heavy rain are expected this fall and winter and pointed to the Watershed Protection Program for guidance and resources.

Before storms the county recommends inspecting drains, gutters and other drainage areas; clearing leaves and debris so water can flow; checking for spots where soil could wash away or where runoff might flow toward buildings; and stabilizing bare or erosion‑prone areas with vegetation, mulch, rock or fiber rolls.

The county also advised that sandbags can help protect property and that it provides a how‑to video on proper sandbag placement.

If you see a problem in the public right‑of‑way, such as fallen trees, blocked drainage, mudslides or erosion reaching a County road, report it through the Tell Us Now app or call the 24/7 hotline at 877‑684‑8000; call 858‑565‑5262 after 5 p.m. and on weekends.

The county warned drivers to "turn around, don't drown" if they encounter floodwater or see a flooding warning sign.
