The National Weather Service forecasts a slight chance of light rain along the coast Thursday night through Friday and a stronger storm late Saturday into Sunday morning.

The County of San Diego posted a preparedness checklist urging residents to ready homes and households ahead of the holiday; the county said this weekend’s rain is expected to be light but that now is a good time to prepare for heavier storms and potential flooding later in the season.

Clear gutters and drains; remove leaves, sticks and other debris so water can flow away from your home. Find and seal leaks; check your roof, windows and doors for gaps and repair problem areas before the rain starts. Trim trees and secure outdoor items; remove weak branches and secure or store patio furniture, trash bins and yard decorations. Check drainage; make sure downspouts direct water away from your home. Keep water out; place sandbags or flood barriers where water could enter your home.

The county also urged households to prepare emergency supplies and communications: register for AlertSanDiego to get emergency alerts by phone, email and text; review your household emergency plan; and pack an emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, medicine, important documents, flashlights, batteries and pet supplies. The county directed readers to AlertSanDiego.org for free preparedness resources and local El Niño and flood-safety information and services.

The County of San Diego Communications Office published the advisory on Oct. 29, 2026.
