The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District said it completed the North San Bernardino Fuels Reduction Project.

Crews cleared approximately 622 acres and established a strategic fuel break from Highway 18 to Devil Canyon; they removed and disposed of more than 20 tons of trash and more than 2,000 discarded tires from the project area, the county said.

The work reduces hazardous fuels and creates areas where firefighters can more effectively engage a wildfire and slow its spread toward nearby communities.

County Fire said the project was supported by CAL FIRE, California Conservation Corps Pomona Crew 1, the city of San Bernardino, Union Pacific Railroad, the San Bernardino County Flood Control District and Burrtec Waste Industries.

The project is part of the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District’s Fuels Mitigation Program; County Fire said personnel identify and complete vegetation-management projects year-round where treatment can reduce fire intensity, slow spread and provide safer locations to defend communities.

County Fire acknowledged that fuels reduction cannot eliminate the threat of wildfire; the agency said proactive mitigation can still help reduce fire intensity and give firefighters additional opportunities to protect lives, property and communities.
